More AI? More Humanity: Why Human-Centered Communication Is the New Competitive Edge
While organizations race to adopt AI tools and automation, many are discovering an ironic twist: the more tech-driven the workplace becomes, the more critical human connection becomes. As algorithms crunch data and bots generate content, what stands out, what influences, leads, and lasts, is the power of authentic communication.
The Age of AI... and Emotional Burnout
AI is changing workflows, increasing efficiencies, and even writing & reading emails. But it can’t read the room. It doesn’t pick up on the raised eyebrow in a Zoom meeting or know when your “yes” actually means “I’m overwhelmed.” In a workplace flooded with automation, it’s easy for humanity to get lost and when that happens, so does morale, creativity, and trust.
“Communication is no longer a soft skill - it’s a survival skill.”
The Real Cost of Miscommunication
According to a study I often cite in my keynotes, workplace miscommunication costs companies an average of $12,506 per employee per year. Add to that the stress, turnover, and lost productivity from misunderstandings and emotional misfires, and it's clear: clarity and connection aren't nice-to-haves, they’re bottom-line essentials.
AI can process the data, but it can’t decode your coworker’s silence after a meeting.
What AI CAN’T Do
AI doesn't:
Decode drama before it explodes.
Inspire trust in seven seconds flat.
Build inclusive environments where every voice is heard.
Leaders Need Scripts That Aren’t Written by AI
Great leaders don’t just lead tasks - they lead people. And people come with their own show bibles (a term from my soap writing days), their own histories, triggers, and dreams. As a leader, it's important to learn the show bibles within you organization, understand the scripts and learn how to spot and avoid the plot twists.
AI Plot Twists And How To Solve Them
AI might help us move faster, analyze smarter, and communicate more consistently, but it doesn’t read between the lines. It doesn’t catch micro-missteps that cost trust, morale, or team cohesion. These are the human plot twists that AI can’t decode and that your leaders and teams must be trained to navigate.
1. Data Dump Decisions
Plot Twist: A team relies on dashboards and metrics to guide decisions but forgets the emotional or interpersonal fallout on real people. Or DOESN’T CHECK THE DATA! (Can you say Deloitte?)
Flip the Script: Review AI output! And then, overlay the data with dialogue. Host a human debrief: “Here’s what the data says. What do you think it’s missing?”
2. Scheduling Oversight
Plot Twist: An AI scheduling tool sets meeting agenda, but misses the fact that one team member hasn’t been heard from at the last three meetings.
Flip the Script: Train leaders to notice invisible input gaps. AI doesn’t catch psychological safety red flags, you do.
3. Tone-Deaf Feedback
Plot Twist: AI-generated performance reviews rely on standardized language that feels generic, hollow, or overly harsh.
Flip the Script: Add a voice note or handwritten addendum. Let people hear or feel that they matter beyond the metrics.
4. Automation Alienation
Plot Twist: A chatbot or AI tool replaces human touchpoints in customer or employee journeys, and connection suffers. Customers feel alienated.
Flip the Script: Reintroduce human “check-in” moments, especially after automated experiences. Ask, “What was that like for you?” and listen.
